home stretch
So, I’m unofficially counting down. My Heather Ross fabric design class is only a couple weeks away and I’m getting super excited. I really don’t know what to expect, and sadly, I have no real design ideas ready to turn into some awesome fabric. So my plan is to just soak it up.
In celebration of my upcoming class, I spent some hard earned camera strap money on a big pile of half-yard cuts of Far Far Away II. If you’re looking for it, Purl has it all (well, they did today anyway). They should arrive in a few days.
Now riddle me this - is it lame to make myself a new tote and camera strap out of it and bring it to Heather’s class? Is that too hero-worshippy? I feel like this is one of those things “if you have to ask…” I mean, basically, I can’t play it cool. I seriously don’t know how. I might as well go to class in Munki Munki pjs.

Latifah Saafir, co-founder of the LA Modern Quilt Guild, has reinvented her blog. Her new home on the www is http://www.thequiltengineer.com/, and it’s looking awesome. I especially love her latest quilt.
Tons of awesome new fabric on the way. I’m greedily eyeing the new LizzyHouse line, Castle Peeps. And not just for the awesome name! I especially love the castle-scape prints, although I truly love the whole line.

**Update, 3/7/2010: I noticed yesterday that they removed the plum gnomes from the lineup. I guess they’re working on the dye!
I’m still plugging away at stashbusters. I did a lot of sewing this weekend, but unfortunately, camera straps don’t use much fabric. I would say I used 2 1/4 yards of fabric this weekend, though! Not bad.
My friend Alison wants to go in on some Heather Ross fabric from Spoonflower. We’ll purchase 3 or 4 different prints, and divvy up the yardage, so we all get some of each print. I’m all for it! But I’m being a good girl and waiting for April 1st.
One bad thing about those $20/yard prints is that apparently they really fade. Banquopak on Flickr has been doing some wash tests, and the fading is pretty bad on the dark plum. I’m not sure I care all that much. The only thing that concerns me is that I don’t prewash, and I use a lot of white. So if they’re fading that much, that dye is going somewhere, right? Will a color catcher catch that much color? (that is your tongue twister for the day :))
I still want all the mushrooms and the gnomes, anyway.

Sold! And Treasure, too!
I’m pretty excited - I sold 3 camera straps yesterday!!! The two Denyse Schmidt ones went right away, which doesn’t surprise me. I need to make some more of those RIGHT AWAY. And an owl strap is making its way to Poland! So awesome! My sales were to NY, LA and Poland…how’s that for a little internet shop? Super cool.
I’m working on my packaging - what do you think? It’s not perfect, but without making any kind of big investment - I think it looks nice.
And even more exciting, my most wonderfullest friend, Pancockies, sent me a box of Munki Munki treasure. When I was on my serious Munki hunt a few weeks ago, she took up the challenge and scoured her own Marshalls…all the way in the Sunshine State! She found these adorable kittens, which I believe, are the find of the century. She also found a lovely shoes robe and a couple sets of coffee pjs. She is the BEST! Think a coffee camera strap is a good idea?

I want all of the fabrics but I can’t afford them! My fingers are crossed that anyone will be able to order a swatch collection from anyone soon. Right now, only designers can order their own swatch collection. But why would I want my own fabrics when I can have Heathers???
No matter what, I think those yellow mushrooms and gnomes on plum will have to be mine.

Portland or bust!
Okay, I’m going crazy! I registered for that class! I’m enrolled in Heather Ross’ Fabric Design workshop at PNCA’s Summer of Making. “But you live in CA…that’s crazy”, you say! Yes, well, my husband said, “let’s make a road trip out of it!” And that was all I needed. There were only 15 spots in that class, and they’re almost all gone. You only live once, right? When do you get a chance to go and learn from the best? It’s like someone saying, “Hey, Blabby, want to go take a three-day song-writing workshop with the Indigo Girls for the bargain basement price of $400?” HELL YES! I would have signed up for that too.
I wish I could go to PNCA for real. I’d use up my GI Bill there in a second. I was browsing through the courses and it’s super awesome.
One small intimidating point is that the description says “bring your own creative ideas to life”…wait, I need my OWN ideas? I like Heather’s ideas! I’ll need to work on that between now and July :) Good thing I have some time!

Far Far Away II
Via True Up, I heard about Heather Ross’ second Far Far Away line. Let’s discuss this. I truly love those unicorns and snails from the first line. I even love the frogs. In fact, I just bought a little more yardage from Jenny at Home Ec. BUT, I’m the littlest bit stumped by the double gauze…I mean, I’m feeling scissor shy with my other FFA prints. It’s so nice, but it intimidates me. Anyone else? I’m going to end up just mixing it in with regular old cotton prints and feeling like a horrible sinner the whole time. But then, I’ll still love them, so it won’t matter. Right? Any thoughts on this double gauze business? But I love those colors so much…especially the oranges and greys. She is the best.
And read this! What I wouldn’t give…I mean, really. I just told my husband about this little class and he said, “did you sign up?” That is 1) why I love him and 2) why we’re in debt. It’s actually not too crazy…I mean, I have some family in Portland (that I haven’t seen in 20 years…) and I could drive there (in 20+ hours). Oh, that class is a dream. But the thing is, even if I went to that class, I wouldn’t learn to draw like Heather Ross. And that’s what I want to learn. I want to learn how she creates these witty little creatures and people and settings and puts them in perfect but totally unique colors. I don’t think that’s what she’ll be teaching. But I STILL WANT TO GO!

Well, I’ll spare you the picture of the pajama pile that rises almost as high as my sewing table, but I’ve been maniacally visiting Marshalls and TJ Maxxes all over Southern California, hunting down any Munki Munki product I could find. Well, that’s not exactly true. I did choose to not buy a few pieces that I saw because I already had so many…like the shoes robe…which I already have five of. I mean - now I have to figure out how to unload all of this stuff on eBay or whatever. I know I’ll make my money back and get to keep all that I want for my stash, but I’m regretting getting so much. I just don’t have the room! And now I want to start sewing, but I have to get all this craziness organized and put away before I can do anything!
Here’s what I’ve found. I’ve entered into the fabric swapping world on Flickr - it’s going well so far. No creeps yet. Fingers crossed! So far, I’ve been able to swap for four more prints…very exciting!
Anyway, I think I’ve found the perfect pattern to bring them all together. Elizabeth over at Oh, Fransson! has come up with a Map of the States! block that I just love. She’s written a tutorial. I’m going to mostly follow it, but instead of cutting apart all the block pieces, I’m going to use paper piecing. Looking forward to it.
* Update - Just when I thought I had things all figured out, I ran across this awesome munki quilt tutorial…too many ideas. SOMEONE PLEASE CLEAN UP MY SEWING ROOM!

Munki TREASURE
Oh man. It’s been an exciting day. We were headed to the library, but instead, I thought, “hmmm, I wonder if Marshalls has any Munki Munki pjs anymore” because I had read a couple people found them there…
(FYI - my most favorite illustrator/fabric designer, Heather Ross, does the artwork for Munki Munki. The pjs are lovely, but retail for about $100 a set - something I’d never pay. Especially since I don’t want to wear them, I want the fabric they’re made of for sewing.)
Anyway, we hit the Marshalls in the next town, and I hit pay dirt. Five sets of pjs at $10 each! BARGAIN! Sadly, none of them fit me, but that’s okay, because I’m just going to chop them into perfect little pieces for lovely little quilts.
One snag is that these five sets are the kind with the knit shirt, not the button up pj shirt. So I don’t know what to do with these shirts that are too small for me, and I don’t know if anyone will want them without the matching pants. But maybe I can do something with them also - the colors are great, and the knit is super comfy.
We never go to Marshalls, so I didn’t realize that they have a toy section. So when I was done treasure hunting for pjs, my cute kid - who absolutely doesn’t need anymore toys, maybe EVER - got to dig through the piles of half opened toy packages to see what he could find. He ended up with a super cool Sand Man (from Spiderman) that has really bendy legs and arms. SCORE. Score for me, because it was only $5.
So after nap time, my husband says, “you know, I could use some cologne.” Really? Well, wouldn’t you know, they have cologne at Marshalls! So we head out to another town. No Munki Munki pjs to be found, but we did score some Ralph Lauren Blue for $20 and Mr. Fantastic and The Thing (Fantastic Four action figures - all with really bendy arms and legs!) for $7. Now I’m starting to really enjoy this, so we head to one more Marshalls.
PAY DIRT! I find two more sets of Munki Munki pjs - these with the button up top. Bicycles and Farmers Market! Super awesome.
I also went crazy recently and got a bunch of Hope Valley and Nicey Jane - that treasure should be arriving in the mail in a couple days, and I can’t wait. The oranges and purples in Hope Valley are going to go perfect with my new coffee munki munki print. I see a fun coffee quilt in MY future. I think my poor sister may never get a quilt.
One last project that didn’t involve shopping. Actually, I did have to go to Home Depot, so scratch that. Anyway, I got a metal dowel and some cafe curtain hangers, and put up this handy ribbon holder. These spools used to be in the bottom drawer of a craft organizer that is really hard to get to. I also have a ribbon jar, for when I get yard cuts, but I think this is going to be a good solution for my spools. And it’s always fun to get out my drill :)
